Towards the end of his A-Levels, Thomas was torn between going to University or undertaking an Apprenticeship; he knew he wanted to study Quantity Surveying but was unsure about which educational route to take next. Whilst Thomas was working out what was the next step for him, he found a role in recruitment. It was during this time that he decided an Apprenticeship was the right avenue for him.

Thomas began to search for Quantity Surveying Apprenticeships and came across the role of Quantity Surveyor with the Heathrow Shared Apprenticeship Scheme. So, Thomas took the plunge and applied and was over the moon when he was told he was successful.

Thomas found the initial change from A-Levels to an Apprenticeship challenging but enjoyable. Even-though the workload had increased for him, he was thriving in his position and saw it as a great opportunity to advance his skills. Thomas has dramatically improved his formal communication skills, decision making and data analysis explanations, whilst obtaining his CSCS card and undertaking courses in baggage and airport safety.

Now, Thomas recommends the scheme to everyone, as he feels that it is limitless in its ability to provide great opportunities and set foundations for solid careers. Thomas’ advice is to “take your time”, like he did, to make sure that you make the right decision to succeed in your career.

When Thomas refers to time before starting his Apprenticeship, he admits that he used to “just get through the day” but now loves coming into work every day. In the future, Thomas is looking to undertake a Level 6 Quantity Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship to become chartered in his field.
