On the 6th of February Team Heathrow colleagues gathered at the Academy for the annual celebration and recognition of Apprenticeships and Apprentices at Heathrow. The event was hosted by Olivia, Digital Marketing Apprentice at the Heathrow Employment and Skills Academy. Speakers included Heathrow’s CEO, John Holland-Kaye, Heathrow’s Chief People Officer, Paula Stannett and The Rt Hon. The Lord Blunkett. Additionally, guest speaker Gemma George from World Duty Free shared the business’ journey with Apprenticeships at the Academy.

To highlight the importance of Apprenticeships, three Team Heathrow Apprentices took part in a live Q&A on stage to share their Apprenticeship experiences. Hannah, Chisholm and Winch, Rhea, World Duty Free and Clive, Heathrow Airport Ltd praised the Apprenticeship programme and encouraged employers to maximise Apprenticeship opportunities in their businesses.

Together, their message was clear. Apprenticeships and the up skilling of colleagues are pivotal in the success of Team Heathrow and are a valued route to development.

Not only were there celebrations of Apprenticeships, but of projects and targets that have been accomplished so far. Project Search is a supported internship programme for young adults with learning difficulties aged 18-24. The Academy have been supporting Project Search for the last 18 months. At last year’s Apprenticeship event, six students were invited to assist on the day with hospitality and reception roles. Since then, four students have found sustainable employment at Heathrow.

In response to the Skills Taskforce Recommendations of widening the Academy community programme and supporting Care Leavers into employment, the Community Team have been working hard to make that happen by introducing a new route designed for Care Leavers. By working closely with local boroughs and signing the Care Leaver Covenant in 2019, the Academy have been able to successfully support 10 Care Leavers into employment, with four undertaking an Apprenticeship. This year, that target has doubled.

After successful speeches and celebrations, employers made their way to the atrium to make their Apprenticeship pledges for 2020. A fantastic total of 334 Apprenticeship opportunities were pledged for this year.
