From working the bar to raising the bar
Alan focuses on his career and looks forward to the future
Alan started life in Australia before moving to the UK with his family when he was just seven. After leaving school, Alan learnt the trade of painting & decorating but it would be some time before he found a career he felt truly happy in. He tried his hand at gardening, recycling services and even digging graves but then Alan joined the Heathrow team at JD Wetherspoon in Terminal 5.
Soon after taking up his role of Bar & Floor Associate at Wetherspoon’s, Alan’s Manager Jenny, recognised his potential and suggested that he apply for the Hospitality Services Apprenticeship Level 2 at the Heathrow Employment & Skills Academy. Functional Skills Trainer, Nicky says “It was great to work with Alan and see his confidence and ability grow as the months progressed.”
Alan sees the experience as a positive one and he’s proud of what he’s achieved. He says, “The guys at the Academy are brilliant and help to keep you motivated. I enjoy being part of the team at Wetherspoon’s – there’s plenty of banter and I’m happy where I am.”
“With two children under ten, spending time with my family is really important to me. I like the way you can study a lot of your Apprenticeship at work and learn on the job. There are great opportunities for career progression at Wetherspoon’s and I’m looking forward to what the future holds for me and my family.”
