From knock-back to giving back
Determined Scott achieves his goals and helps others to do the same
Before coming to Heathrow, Iver-based Scott worked for Debenhams as a Service and Sales Specialist. He enjoyed the role but didn’t feel he was getting the opportunity to develop as quickly as he would like, so he successfully applied for a position with World Duty Free, starting in Heathrow Terminal 5. Following a month’s induction training, Scott had his first contact with Heathrow Academy when he completed a Cultural Awareness and Language course in Mandarin. After just four months in his role, Scott was invited onto a six month Trainee Leader course run by World Duty Free. “It was exactly what I was looking for” explains Scott. “World Duty Free are really focussed on training and the management team were all really interested in me and my development.”
Scott worked his way through the course but unfortunately was unsuccessful at the final presentation stage. Despite the setback, Scott saw it as a learning opportunity. “It was a bit of a knock but I realised I hadn’t put enough time and effort into preparing my presentation. That taught me a valuable lesson” says Scott. Shortly after he took up a position in Terminal 1 as a Personal Shopper and then began an apprenticeship in team leading through Heathrow Academy. “I took every opportunity I could through the apprenticeship and at work to develop my leadership skills” says Scott. “Once I’d completed the apprenticeship I went back and passed the presentation so I was promoted to a Team Leader.” Scott is now completing an Advanced Apprenticeship in Management and has even become a mentor on behalf of Heathrow Academy.
“The Heathrow Academy Team have really helped me with my development. They’re honest with you about what you need to work on and support you along the way to help you achieve your goals. I’m growing as a leader, gaining qualifications and I’m now a mentor which is something I’m really passionate about.”
