At Heathrow, our vision is to be an extraordinary airport fit for the future. Achieving this vision requires a talented workforce, and we believe that this talent is right here on our doorstep. Our strategy, ‘Connecting People and Planet,’ underlines our commitment to being an inclusive local employer of choice and sets out our ambitious goal of creating 10,000 jobs, apprenticeships, and early career opportunities by 2030.

Through a range of inspiring experiences and tailored support to ensure inclusivity, the Academy excites individuals about jobs and careers, equips them with essential skills and employability know-how, and brokers jobs offers with a diverse range of employers at the airport, our Team Heathrow partners.

In collaboration with our Team Heathrow partners, further and higher education and employment charities and organisations such as Jobcentre Plus, we are developing a workforce fit for the future and bringing socio-economic benefits to our local communities.

About Heathrow World of Work

Heathrow World of Work is our inclusive employability programme aimed at inspiring young people in education to build their confidence and skills through real experiences of the work so that they can unlock jobs and careers at the airport and beyond. The programme consists of three stages; ‘Take Off’, ‘In-Flight’, and ‘Destination’.

Take Off

‘Take Off’ refers to our primary school activities, whereby pupils are introduced to the world of work, and the exciting wide range of opportunities at Heathrow. Through various engaging activities, pupils are also encouraged to explore themes such as sustainability, which helps them to develop a better understanding of common topics in the workplace.

In-Flight

Focussing on secondary school and college students, ‘In-Flight’ helps to develop students’ skills by providing workshops, work experiences, insights weeks, and practical activities relevant to the curriculum.

Destination

This is the final stage of the programme, which aims to unlock early career pathways and entry level job opportunities that empower young people to start their career journey.

Empowering individuals to develop their skills

The world of work within the aviation industry is ever-changing, with careers and jobs growing at a rapid rate. As our jobs evolve, it is important that that our skill sets also evolve, preparing us to learn, grow and adapt to our new environments.

Through our partnership with Skills Builder, we can offer candidates searching for employment at the airport free access to the Universal Framework for Essential Skills. The eight essential skills of the framework break down each skill into tangible steps, supporting progress for individuals of all ages and at all stages of their education or career. By using the online benchmarking tool, candidates can easily identify their essential skill strengths and areas for improvement.
